Our focus on redirecting resources towards MAPA groups stems from the belief that the most impactful action against the climate crisis is taken by people at the frontlines. This is because those on the margins are the ones currently experiencing the future that the rest of the world is trying to avoid, and as such, are innovating solutions in realms of resilience, adaptation, and regeneration. In addition to possessing the experiences, knowledge(s), and urgency necessary for deriving the most effective solutions, MAPA is also where the transformational impact per unit of resource is the highest, especially if supported in a decentralized manner that centres the needs of the community.

Primarily, we have an explicit aim of making climate action-related financial ‘giving’ (which we call ‘supporting’), more equitable and just by breaking down hierarchical relationships between donors (who we call ‘Supporters’) and Partner Groups. While this allows for greater ownership and discretion over usage of funds, our emphasis on building relationships beyond one-off acts of financial support also differentiates us from most other platforms, stressing the importance of community and kinship in achieving lasting climate action. We also underline the two-way exchange between Supporters and Partners, with resources such as finance, time, and networks being mobilized by partners who are best placed to maximize the potential of their impact, in exchange for imparting their traditional wisdom, local expertise, and experiential stories to support supporters on their climate action journeys.

GreenCheck builds extensive, trust-based relationships with each of the Partners, with regular interactions aimed toward ensuring that their stories, needs, activities and visions are clearly communicated to our audience of supporters and allies. Additionally, our transparency-premised reporting protocol clearly states the amount of money collected, dates on which it is sent, as well as the purposes for which it is used and the local transformations that we help facilitate. No, any amount makes a difference! However, we do strongly encourage supporters to make their donation a recurring one as our goal is to build lasting and long-term relationships between Supporters and Partners.

Yes! GreenCheck is registered as a 501(c)(3) (EIN: 93-1768165) in the United States and so donations are tax deductible in the US. We also provide a tax receipt at the end of every calendar year.

Partners are selected based on a robust but flexible criteria oriented towards maximizing the presence of our three formative values - solidarity, equity and transparency. As such, all partners groups must necessarily: be community-centered - in that they work for the benefit of local communities and ideally are led in a manner where the community collectively makes decisions be able to legally accept funds - either directly through a registered entity or through allies working closely with them for an extended period of time have a demonstrable need - through projects that already exist with clear goals and lack the financial support needed to progress substantially be long-term - and not one off projects whose impact is limited to short-term outcomes.

Once primary contact has been established with a prospective partner, either through our own outreach or through a referral by a current partner, supporter, community member or ally, we engage in a live discussion (where possible) to ensure that the preliminary selection criteria has been met. Following this, we evaluate the impact potential of our partner through engaging with regionally located experts who help us understand the level of commitment to change based on their historic and current activities, scope of impact based on the suitability and criticality of their activities within the particular socio-geo-political context, ability to form lasting relationships based on their openness to providing regular updates and engaging in routine dialogue within capacity, and robustness of solution understood through Indigenous or Western scientific assessment of most impactful strategies to combat climate change. Once this understanding is achieved, conducted through live conversations on call or in-person where possible, we evaluate both the relative impact of the partner among the mix of options under consideration as well as our own capacity to be proactive supporters for the project. The final decision rests upon a collective consensus by our core team, with most weightage given to the level to which our partners embody our three core values.

Our assessment strategy is grounded in the understanding of impact as a highly contextual phenomena and therefore we have no rigid metrics to gauge the absolute change created by each partner, especially given that are yet to start redirecting financial resources towards our partner groups. However, we have constructed a preliminary framework that enables us to evaluate the work of each partner based on the transformations achieved in the following five realms - ecological, cultural, political, economic and social.In each of these areas respectively, we will endeavour to understand how the partner has contributed to enhancing: ecosystems and climatic resilience or mitigation, traditional cultural practices and kinship networks, internal and external transition of decision-making power to the people, capacity to engage in meaningful livelihood activities and solidarity, equity, and justice.
